Chief Engineer

JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for directing the maintenance teams throughout the Tahoe/Truckee Area while creating and managing departmental standards and procedures for property management and HOA.  Responsible for coordinating EWH personnel or vendors involved in repair and maintenance of the buildings, grounds and utility systems of properties managed by EWH.

 

Job Summary

The Chief Engineer leads maintenance operations across the Tahoe/Truckee portfolio, ensuring all buildings, systems, and grounds are maintained to the highest standards. This role oversees staff, vendors, and departmental procedures, and is responsible for preventative maintenance, project execution, budget management, and HOA coordination.

Role Overview

The Chief Engineer provides overall leadership to the maintenance team, including hiring, coaching, performance management, scheduling, payroll oversight, and training. The role establishes and maintains SOPs, ensures compliance with safety and OSHA standards, and drives operational efficiency and accountability across the department.

The position oversees building systems, including mechanical, fire, life safety, and alarm systems, and partners with managers and supervisors to ensure proper operation and maintenance. It also manages inventory controls, coordinates with other departments, and uses company systems to track work, labor, and performance.

In support of HOA operations, the Chief Engineer implements preventative maintenance programs, conducts regular property inspections, develops work orders, and collaborates with Community Association Managers to evaluate and refine contract scopes. The role regularly attends board meetings, providing updates on maintenance and capital projects.

The Chief Engineer leads residential maintenance programs, ensuring homes are maintained to brand standards and coordinating with internal teams and external vendors for services beyond HOA scope.

The role partners with leadership on annual budgeting and is accountable for operating within both departmental and HOA financial guidelines while maximizing efficiency and billable labor. It also maintains strong communication across departments, vendor relationships, and regional partners, and participates in on-call coverage as part of the MOD program.

Additional Expectations

This position requires flexibility to support operational needs and perform additional duties as assigned. The Chief Engineer is expected to maintain a professional, collaborative, and solutions-oriented approach at all times.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required, along with prior supervisory experience. Experience in common interest developments, strong communication skills for board interactions, and knowledge of building systems (including boiler and chiller systems) are highly preferred. A valid California or Nevada driver’s license is required.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Reports directly to VP of Operations and Association Managers.

SALARY: $80k to $100K DOE

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Prior supervisory experience required.  Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year College or university; or at least three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Experience in common interest developments preferred. Must possess a valid California or Nevada driver’s license.  Experience with condo Chiller/Boiler systems. Confidence speaking at meetings with board members.
